[Notes] Mpox as a global health emergency

I’m sure everyone might have seen the news, but I think it’s rather important to keep informed about mpox being a global health emergency, and having been found outside of Africa (reported by Sweden). Here’re the headlines I think are important for others to know:This is the 2nd time in 3 years mpox is being declared an international emergency, but this time the threat is deadlier, and those most at risk include women and children under 15. Being declared as an international emergency gives way for countries to prepare and share resources to each other, esp to low-resource countries. Those in developed countries less likely to be affected severely. Note that there already exists a vaccine, there are efforts to make an mRNA vaccine, and WHO has signed off on an Emergency Use Listing (prereq for groups like Gavi to purchase and distribute the shots in low-income nations). But vaccines aren’t enough – we need increased surveillance, diagnostics, and research. Not all countries are as transparent/resourced in surveillance like Sweden.
